| More than 60 disabled people have been given a skills boost as a result of receiving funding from the European Union Building Sustainable Prosperity Funding. The funding has enabled the organisation offer accredited training in a range of qualifications to employees, which will enhance their career opportunities. Margaret Dunlea USEL’s Training Manager said, " As part of our commitment to this European Project, and working with our partner Shankill Open Learning Centre, we have been able to fit out the training room with new computers and a range of specialist software to ensure that each person’s needs are met and that all employees have access to the training".
Joanne Cameron, Manager of Shankill Open Learning, expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership. She pointed out that, during the second phase of the project, links will be established with employers to identify suitable work placements for STEP participants who wish to sample other job opportunities.
The project effectively started delivering training in August 2002. To date 36 employees have received accreditation in Introduction to Computer Skills and these and other programme participants are continuing to undertake a range of further accreditations. The programme has been a huge success from the employee’s point of view, so much so that 4 employees turned up for their regular 3 hour weekly training sessions even though they were off on annual leave!! |
